Many celebrities, such as Jane Fonda and Leonardo DiCaprio, have taken it upon themselves to make the world more eco-friendly– and it’s easy to do your part, too! Fonda, an Oscar winner and experienced activist has made headlines recently for her participation in the Fire Drill Friday protests. Greta Thunberg started these protests to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change. In an interview with ABC News in January, Fonda stated: “All of these young people striking on Friday, saying, ‘Come on, adults, where are you? We didn’t cause this, but our future is at stake. Don’t let us fight for this by ourselves,’ So I said, ‘Right, I’m not doing enough.'” You, too, can make a difference!
In the Fall of 2019, actress Jane Fonda was arrested multiple times for protesting on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. every Friday. Though some found the demonstrations disruptive, Fonda didn’t give up the fight.
“There’s never been a ticking time bomb hanging over our heads,” she said. “You know, this isn’t one war or issue in one place. This is the future of the entire planet. There’s a looming catastrophe that will affect all of humanity. That’s what’s different. That’s never happened before in the history of humankind.”
Shailene Woodley has been making small, conscious choices to combat climate change in her daily routine for years, something that can seem daunting, as Fonda admitted.
“Our earth has always mattered to me, though I couldn’t tell you why. Maybe I see it as the most objective listener out there. It simply is, without taking sides,”The Secret Life of the American Teenager alum told Gotham magazine in September 2019. “Every action I take is done with mindfulness. I’m not motivated by anything other than the desire to have children and give them a better world than the one we live in now. So, I will work hard every day to bring about change.”

Rainn Wilson
In November of 2022, the former Office star announced that he had changed his name to Rainfall Heat Wave Extreme Winter Wilson to protest climate change. “I’m as serious as the melting Arctic,” he wrote in a Twitter post, explaining that he’d used an Arctic Risk Name Generator website. “I’m hoping this name change brings attention to this growing and melting issue,” Wilson continued. “We need world leaders at COP27 to take notice and take action. The Arctic is melting at millions of liters per second, yet this problem can’t seem to make a name for itself, so it’s up to us to make a name for it.”
Adele
It was widely reported in 2012 that the “Set Fire to the Rain” singer paid a significant amount of money to convert her home in Brighton, England, into a solar-powered space.
Leonardo DiCaprio
In 1998, the Titanic star set up the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation with the aim of “restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and ensuring the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants.” He has since been named the United Nations representative on climate change and has given millions of dollars to different environmental activist groups.
Pierce Brosnan
For decades, actor Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye Smith have been outspoken environmentalists. In the 1990s, Brosnan partnered with Greenpeace. He has been honored by the Oceania group and named Best-dressed Environmentalist by the Sustainable Style Foundation in 2004.
Jane Fonda
Multiple arrests have been made for actress Jane Fonda’s organization of Fire Drill Friday protests, which aim to bring attention to climate change in Washington, D.C. “I’m following the lead of the young people. They are my inspiration,” Fonda stated on The View in November 2019. “All of these people are skipping school to protest the future that we’re taking from them, and they’re a huge inspiration to me.”
Ian Somerhalder
The Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder started his environmental conservation non-profit, The Ian Somerhalder Foundation, in 2010 to help redirect resources towards developing green energy and raising awareness through educational means. In 2014, he was given the title of UN Environment Programme’s Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of World Environment Day.
Shailene Woodley
In 2014, The Big Little Lies actress confessed that most of her clothing comes from thrift stores to maintain a more sustainable lifestyle. “I plan to be a good citizen of this planet by living in harmony with nature instead of constantly fighting against her,” she told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. Two years later, she received the Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award at the 20th Anniversary Global Green Environmental Awards for co-founding the All It Takes organization.
Gisele Bundchen
After being named one of the UNEP’s Goodwill Ambassadors, the Brazilian model said, “I’ve always been passionate about the environment. Mother Earth is our primary means of life support, and by taking proactive measures now to protect the environment, we can aid the world. She began promoting access to clean water in her own country in 2004 and has since devotedly backed several UN environmental programs.
Jack Johnson
The Hawaiian artist and his tour team have donated a large portion of their earnings to environmental charity and made their performances some of the eco-friendliest live performances in the music business. To support the efforts of other non-profits aimed at enhancing arts, music, and environmental education, Jack and his wife, Kim Johnson, founded the Johnson Ohana Foundation.
Brad Pitt
The recovery from Hurricane Katrina was significantly aided by Brad Pitt. He founded the Make It Right foundation immediately after the catastrophe to ensure that all the homes built for the displaced Katrina victims were green-certified. He made it his aim to build 150 green homes for people who were harmed by the storm.
Cate Blanchett
Actress Cate Blanchett became an ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation after being inspired by former U.S. vice president Al Gore. In her role with the Foundation, Blanchett advocates for environmental justice and encourages others to relate their own experiences with climate change. She also assisted with the installation of a solar-powered roof for the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia. Throughout her career, Blanchett has also dedicated time and effort to helping groups like I Speak Earth and SolarAid.
