Lewis Hamilton plans to adopt a ‘carbon neutral’ lifestyle before the new year starts. However, with the excesses of his celebrity lifestyle having been documented through countless posts he has made on his social media accounts over the years, this move has not gone without criticism. Following a since deleted social media post, Hamilton who has millions of followers was blasted for the supposed hypocrisy of his comments in which he said he felt like “giving up on everything” because of the state of the world and thanked those who “gave a damn” about it.
Given the fact that the Formula 1 Mercedes driver makes his living as a champion and competitor in a sport which is notorious for its significant contributions to environmental degradation, the criticism comes as no surprise.
At a recent FIA press conference, Hamilton added some more colour to his outburst, explaining the meaning behind his recent posts about the environment and adopting a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. He said “I was watching a documentary and it was just sad to see the things that we are kind of not aware of.”
“It just inspired me to want to do more and reach out to those who perhaps don’t know some of the things that are happening.”
“I’m trying to make sure that by the end of the year I’m carbon neutral. I don’t allow anyone in my office but also within my household to buy any plastics. I want everything recycle-able down to deodorant, down to toothbrush, all these kind of things. So I’m trying to make as much change as I can in my personal space.”
With his well-documented fleet of luxury cars and his frequent flyer status, social media users couldn’t help but take jibes at him.However, Hamilton revealed that he had sold his private jet and flies not only less often, but also using commercial carriers. In addition, he has taken steps to cut his emissions by replacing his internal combustion road cars with electric cars and also follows a plant-based diet, which he took up back in 2017.
Despite these moves, there is one thing that Hamilton rules out and that is switching from Formula 1 to Formula E – the racing series that exclusivelyuses electrically-powered vehicles. “I have no interest whatsoever to do Formula E” he said.Nevertheless,he does want Formula 1 to make an effort to reduce its environment impact. Whilst acknowledging that the sport still has some way to go in this respect, Hamilton stated “If you look at our sport it’s shifted from using a third less fuel now.
Benedict Cumberbatch demonstrated his support for Extinction Rebellion in London
Whilst taking a break from filming forthe upcoming movie ‘Louis Wain’, Benedict Cumberbatch made an appearance at the site of the Extinction Rebellion protests in Londonto express his support for the movement, which aims to use non-violent civil disobedience to disrupt society and force governments to take stronger action on environmental issues.
Demonstrators were preparing their camp on the streets of London in a bid to ‘shut down’ London for a two-week protest in October, when Cumberbatch arrived at Trafalgar Square. He threw his weight behind the causeby posing with protestors for a couple of hours on the third day of the two-week publicity stunt, which had already taken place in other cities such as Sydney, Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam.
